Sunday Lawn Care: When is the Best Time To Mow Your Lawn?

Contrary to popular belief, Saturday morning at 6 a.m. isn’t the best time to mow the lawn. Apart from common mowing etiquette, there are many reasons to mow later in the morning or even into the evening. Finding the right time to mow the lawn goes beyond noise control and being a good neighbor. Mowing at the right time during the day can actually make your grass and lawn healthier and grow better.

Mow at Mid-Morning

The best time to mow the lawn is mid-morning, between 8 – 10 a.m. This hits the sweet spot of letting the grass dry off from the dew but hitting it early before the sun is too warm. Mowing in the morning is the ideal time to mow because you are out before the sun is in full force. This way, it isn’t too warm for you to be outside, and the grass won’t be dry and crispy when you’re out there. Cutting grass that is already dried out can damage your lawn.

Alternatively, cutting your grass that is too wet can also wreak havoc on your lawn. That is why it is best to wait until later in the morning, after the dew begins to dry. Wet grass can cause tears in the grass and make it harder to cut. Waiting to cut between 8 – 10 a.m. will hit that sweet spot that will promote a healthy lawn while getting the best cut.

Late Afternoon

If you are unable to mow your lawn in the morning, the next best time to mow is late afternoon, specifically between 4 – 6 p.m. At this time of day, the grass is starting to cool off as the sun is getting lower in the sky. This time of day is – similar to mid-morning – at a healthy middleground temperature that is not too hot nor too cold.

Mowing in the late afternoon is also ideal for noise, as you can comfortably mow without worrying about noise complaints. In the mornings, you may risk disturbing sleep. By mowing in the afternoon, you shouldn’t disturb your neighbors.

Bad Times to Mow

Just as finding the best time to mow your lawn is important, it is also useful to know the worst times to mow. Cutting the grass at certain times of day can be detrimental to the health and growth of your lawn. When the sun is at its peak, your grass and the roots can burn if you mow at that time. Cutting grass that is heated up too much can result in damaged roots and stunted growth.

If you mow in the middle of the day, you can also cause damage to yourself. Overheating and getting sunburned is dangerous and simply uncomfortable. Finally, cutting too early or too late can also damage your lawn and disturb your neighbors. Keep proper mowing etiquette in place and keep the noise down in the morning before 8 a.m. and in the evening after 7 p.m. By mowing at the right time of day, you can protect yourself, your grass and your neighborhood reputation.
